An iBeacon is a low-power, low-cost transmitter that communicates with smart devices such as Smart Phones or Tablets. An iBeacon is most often used to initiate an action on a smart device when that smart device gets in close proximity to the iBeacon. The iBeacon uses low-energy Bluetooth or wifi signals to communicate with smart devices. What the iBeacon can be thought of as a middleman device that connects users to web-based content. So, for example, consider Smart Plots, a DMZ technology that utilizes iBeacons. As a farmer approaches a seed hybrid a beacon located near that hybrid will communicate with the farmer's Smart Phone and take the farmer to web-based content related to the hybrid, such as its Yield Results, Videos about it, and more.
iBeacons work by emitting a low-energy Bluetooth or wifi signal that can be picked up and understood by a smart device. When the smart device realizes it is in communication with the iBeacon, the beacon will instruct the smart device to do something, such as pull up a YouTube Video showing a particular seed hybrid preforming well in a drought-stressed environment.
iBeacons can be used in a variety of ways. Our initial product using iBeacons is called Smart Plots which is a product designed to create a connected environment in a traditionally-non-connected area, the experimental test plot. Test Plots provide an abundance of information and provide it in a physical environment that users, such as farmers, can touch and feel. However, without a strong tour guide, such as an agronomist familiar with the plot and its products, it is tough for the user to get the most out of the experience. What Smart Plots aims to do is provide a digital tour guide in a physical world, meaning farms can be digitally guided through the plot by a guide that has immediate access to all the information about all the products.
Pricing on iBeacons vary depending on their use-case. Typically all the beacons we sell come along with a product package, meaning we sell beacons as part of the Smart Plots package as an example. For information on purchasing one-off beacons or a small quantity of them to replace old ones, please contact us. Pricing on these beacons will also vary depending on battery life. Most of the beacons we use have a 1-3 year battery life under normal conditions.
