Full Service Scouting
Moving into 2016, DMZ Aerial will be introducing Full Service Scouting Services to farms and agribusinesses. DMZ's scouting services will be powered by two core technologies, Satellite Imagery and UAV Systems. Along with these two technologies, DMZ will incorporate traditional scouting practices, including Tissue Sampling, as well as sensor information for those customers who opt for more information.
DMZ Scouting Services are focused on data-collection for In-Season management. DMZ's goal is to supply information to farmers and agribusinesses in order to promote Decision-Ag based on actionable data. This data will come in the form of Satellite Imagery, UAV Imagery, Tissue Sampling, as well as sensor data for those customers who opt for more information.
3D Scouting Program
When DMZ first started, the founders of the company developed the 3D Scouting Process - Discovery, Diagnosis, and Documentation. The basic idea of the 3D Scouting Process was to take a macro-view of a field and systematically hone in on a more specific micro-view that could provide actionable information. DMZ still uses the 3D Scouting Process and it is the basis for their Full Service Scouting Services. First, a macro-view of the entire field is obtained via satellite imagery. From there, issues are discovered based on discoloration in either the visible or NDVI image. Once those issues are discovered, a UAV is deployed to take a closer look and assist in the diagnosis of the problem. Additionally, tissue samples may be taken or sensor information may be referenced. Finally, after the diagnosis is complete, all the information, from the satellite image to the tissue sample, is documented with the farmer or Agribusiness.
In-Season Satellite Imagery
DMZ's satellite imagery is obtained from an extensive database of archived imagery as well as In-Season Imagery captured by an array of satellites. Five Images are guaranteed per year using satellite imagery. This type of imagery is subject to weather so you may not get an image on every flyby. However, to give you an idea, last year (2015), Southern Wisconsin farmers received about 25 images throughout the growing season. Every time an image is captured of your enrolled acres, an email, with the new picture(s), will be sent to your email address for review. Additionally, these images will be NDVI.
DMZ has been utilizing UAVs in Agriculture since 2012. This has given the business a lot of experience in UAV Technologies, Operations, Imagery Types, Regulations, and more. DMZ will have a Section 333 Exemption prior to next growing season and will be allowed to provide commercial UAV services to customers. For this reason, DMZ will be implementing Drone Scouting into its scouting packages. The UAV Scouting Services that will be provided include; raw footage, georeferenced imagery, stitched-georeferenced imagery, and more. With these abilities, DMZ will be able to provide actionable data in the form of maps/shape files that are downloadable in Ag Software such as SMS and SST.
Tissue Sampling is a great way of getting In-Season information on a crop. By opting for tissue sampling, customers of DMZ Scouting Services will be able to obtain information relating to the nutrient levels within their crops. In particular, these customers will be able to see if a crop is deficient on a macro or micro nutrient and be able to make a management decision to save yield or push yields higher.
In addition to imagery and tissue sampling, DMZ also provides In-Field Sensor Information. This data can be used to better understand how a crop is progressing and what external factors, such as weather, may be causing a particular issue.
Pricing varies based on location. DMZ is located in Prairie du Sac, WI, however, representatives of DMZ have the ability to travel and provide certain services electronically, such as satellite imagery.
